Sodium Hypochlorite
Sodium Hypochlorite

In general, sodium hypochlorite is dissolved in water at various concentrations. Sodium hypochlorite solids are not commercially available. There is an odor of chlorine in sodium hypochlorite solutions, which are clear, greenish-to-yellow liquids. In water, calcium hypochlorite readily decomposes, releasing oxygen and chlorine. There is also a strong chlorine smell to it. There is no natural occurrence of either compound in the environment. As bleaching agents or disinfectants, sodium hypochlorite and calcium hypochlorite are primarily used. They are components of commercial bleaches, cleaning solutions, and disinfectants for drinking water and waste water purification systems and swimming pools.
